COMPOSER NOTES
A haunting melody sung in unison is powerful in performance. Particularly for spirituals, I want to respect the original tune before adding my own interpretation. When the harmonies eventually enter in the second verse, I wanted them to feel eerie and ungrounded — a long way from the home — before settling into a lush harmonic vocabulary that captures the longing of the text. I composed this piece to be practical for worship settings, but it can certainly hold the room in a concert setting as well. There's nothing showy here, and the deep impact comes from the simplicity, and from the slow tempo. The slower the better! |
