On This Day, Earth Shall Ring   |   Setting of medieval carol Personent Hodie  for advanced SSAATTBB choir & percussion  |   3'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
A lively, percussive Christmas carol that blends medieval and contemporary harmonies.   A concert work that is also accessible for advanced church choirs.

On this day earth shall ring with the song children sing
to the Lord, Christ our King, born on earth to save us;
him the Father gave us.
REFRAIN:  Ideo-o-o, ideo-o-o, ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

His the doom, ours the mirth; when he came down to earth
Bethlehem saw his birth; ox and ass beside him
from the cold would hide him. [REFRAIN]

God's bright star, o'er his head, Magi three to him led;
kneel they low by his bed, lay their gifts before him,
praise him and adore him.
[REFRAIN]

On this day angels sing; with their song earth shall ring,
praising Christ, heaven’s King, born on earth to save us;
peace and love he gave us.

A poignant lament of lost unity, with a pivot to a new groove.    A new concert showpiece!

Sampling of lyrics:
For every voice there is a harmony,
For every heart a soaring melody.
In every rhythm keeping time, a unity.
In every dream, a song of peace.

An Instrument of Peace
   |   Setting of Prayer of St. Francis  for advanced SSAATTBB choir  |   4'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
A new setting of the Prayer of St. Francis that is mystical, tender, and thrilling.  For concerts, or for use by an advanced church choir.

(Peace.)
Make me an instrument of peace,
where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury, grant your pardon.
Where there is doubt, grant your faith.
Where there's despair, grant your hope.
Where there is darkness, grant your light.
Where is sadness, grant your joy!
Divine Creator, grant that I may seek
not so much to be consoled as to console.
To be understood as to understand.
To be loved as to love.
It is in giving we now receive.
It is in pardoning we now are pardoned.
It is in dying we find eternal life.
(Peace.)

Like Wings to Your Dreams
   |   Poetry of Rabindranath Tagore  for SATB choir & piano  |   3.5'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
Tagore's touching poem "My Song" from Crescent Moon (1913). Set as as a sort of magical lullaby, the song depicts the blessing of a child through the power of music.

This song of mine will wind its music around you, my child, like the fond arms of love.

This song of mine will touch your forehead like a kiss of
blessing.

When you are alone it will sit by your side and whisper in your ear, when you are in the crowd it will fence you about with aloofness.

My song will be like a pair of wings to your dreams, it will transport your heart to the verge of the unknown.

It will be like the faithful star overhead when dark night is over your road.

My song will sit in the pupils of your eyes, and will carry
your sight into the heart of things.

And when my voice is silent in death, my song will speak in your living heart.

The Water Is Wide
   |   Irish folk song for SATB div. choir  |   3.75'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
A lush setting of the beloved Irish folk song. Rich with word painting, this arrangement leans into both the longing and the bitterness of lost love.
The water's wide, I can't cross o'er, And neither have I wings to fly.
Build me a boat that'll carry two, And both shall row, my love and I.

Down in the meadow t'other day, A-gath'ring flowers both fine and gay,
A-gath'ring flowers of red and blue,  I little thought what love can do.

I leaned my back up against some oak,
Thinking that he was a trusty tree,
But first he bended and then he broke, And so did my false love to me.

A ship there is, and she sails the sea. She's loaded deep, as deep can be.
But not so deep as the love I'm in, I know not how I sink or swim.

O love is handsome, love is fine. Love is a jewel when 'tis new.
But when it's old, it groweth cold, And fades away like morning dew.

A Thousand Different Colors
   |   Uplifting pop anthem by Audrey Woodhams, arr. for SATB choir & piano   |   3.75'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
A song in awe of the glorious colors of sea and sky, this setting from Audrey Woodhams promises to be a crowd pleaser.  Great for high school choirs.

The silver white waves wash up and bathe my feet,
I look out but cannot see the other side.
The surface water sways, azure, gold and green,
glittering the full spectrum of light.
The sea is not blue, the sea is like you.

A thousand  different colors, moving all together,
more beautiful than words.
It's a symphony of sound singing subtly but loud,
more beautiful than words.

The sun goes down and disappears,
the clouds wave their goodbyes,
in a masterpiece of light and melody.
Wind whispers in my ears and sings a lullaby,
as seagulls call and surf the evening breeze.
The sky is not blue, the sky is like you.

A thousand different colors...

How great is the expanse of all you are to me,
I try, but still I can't describe all your diversity.
How you love, how you lead, like the sky, like the sea.

A thousand different colors...

Open Hearts  |   Prayer of compassion and outreach  for SA(T)B voices & piano  |  4'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE

Text inspired by Matthew 25:37-40, set in a contemporary style.

Open hearts for aching spirits.  Open hearts for broken souls.
Through our open hearts you are drawing near us,
Soothing cares and wakening hopes.

In a world of need, we hear your voice pleading.
With helping hands, we follow your lead.
In the least and lost we will see you in each face.
Please open our hearts to share your grace.

Open hearts for aching spirits. Open hearts for broken souls.
Through our open hearts you are drawing near us,
Soothing cares and wakening hopes.

In sharing food, in clothing the poor, in welcoming strangers,
In healing the sick, in visiting prisons, we follow your ways.
In each child of God we will meet you face to face.
Please open our hearts to share your grace,

Please open our hearts to your mercy.
Please open our ears to answer your call.
Please open our eyes to see you in each face.
With love for an aching world,
With hope for a broken soul,
Please open every heart with healing grace.

Sleep, Sleep   |   Pairing of beloved Christmas lullabies for SATB choir & piano   |   3.5'
VIEW ON YOUTUBE
This charming setting pairs two beloved Christmas lullabies:  Greensleeves (English carol) and Gevaert (French tune).

Sleep, sleep...

Dreaming near the ox and sheep, Sleep, sleep, oh sleep.
Angels hover nigh, covering the sky. Praise raising high above the God of Love.

What child is this who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?

Raise, raise the song on high, the Mother sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary.

Sleep, sleep.
